Who We Are

Rhythms of Grace is a way for people with special needs to enjoy worship in their own way.  The service was created so that parents could have a place where they could worship with their children without worrying about verbal disruptions or distracting movements and gestures. Our congregation includes families with members of all ages – from 2 to 45 years – and their parents, siblings, grandparents and caregivers.

At Rhythms of Grace we gather and write our prayers for the day as all are welcomed and made comfortable. We share a story from the Bible and then explore the story at learning centers, choosing from a variety of sensory and tactile activities adapted to each theme. We re-gather and break bread in a circle, and then pray our thanks and bid our friends goodbye until next time. Music is an integral part of our worship. The service is full of music, movement and laughter.

We meet every Sunday at 2 PM at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1819 Heights Blvd. For more information contact Lisa Puccio, lpuccio@saecheights.org.26169487_1653194161404394_3183138226488107378_n

Our Third Sunday Service, Rhythms of Grace

An Anniversary Reflection

By Lisa Puccio

In February of 2015 St. Andrew’s added a third Sunday service unlike any weekly worship service in the Episcopal church. Rhythms of Grace was originally designed in another diocese to be a monthly offering for families who needed an alternative to traditional worship. After 3 years of offering monthly worship in Houston, Rhythms of Grace moved to St. Andrew’s with a new vision to build a community of families engaged in weekly worship and fellowship. Because of the open hearts and loving support of the people of St. Andrew’s, that vision is flourishing.

We have 14 families who attend regularly or occasionally. We have three wonderful volunteers and three incredible musicians. Rhythms of Grace Houston is a model for other parishes exploring what special needs ministry can be, but more importantly the service is a statement about what ministry in general can be. We welcome, we accept, we listen to, and we love one another. Come and see!

Redesigning Our Space

Rhythms of Grace is growing – and so we’ll be moving our worship space around a bit.  A few weeks ago I reached out to designer, Oscar Guevera and asked him his thoughts about our Parish Hall set up. He had some great suggestions! This Sunday, June 3, you’ll notice a rearrangement of the room, hopefully creating a more accessible worship and response area.

What Are You Doing on Sunday Afternoon?

Every Sunday at 2:00 Rhythms of Grace welcomes families to the Parish Hall at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in the Heights. We have a joyful, exciting worship experience full of music, activity and community. We welcome everyone who would like to come and be a part of this very different, open and loving experience. Come and see, and come and help. Would you like to know more? Contact Lisa Puccio at 713-857-8155 or lpuccio@saecheights.org.

Confirmation

An affirmation of faith, Confirmation is a public affirming of one’s Baptismal vows. Confirmation also reflect’s an individual’s desire to be wholly a part of a worshiping community.

Even for those young people who cannot verbally express their desire to be a part of this worshiping community, their desire is evident in the great joy they express when they are in our midst. Sometimes parents tell me that they want their children to wait until they understand the sacrament before they receive Holy Communion, an I always respond “Do you mean that you understand the Holy Mystery of Communion?”

We become full members of the Body of Christ at Baptism. This Sunday, October 1 we are overjoyed to receive seven young people into the full membership of our Rhythms of Grace community through Confirmation and we warmly welcome the Rt. Rev. Hector Monterosso to our service.DTvzHRaa
